Ethernet Ports, Well a lack of the things.
I finally get home from my holidays and can’t wait to connect some of my gadgets and relocate my home entertainment system and media center only to find out that I don’t have nearly enough spare Ethernet ports. My current gigabit switch only has 4 ports. One is being used for my adsl modem which leaves me 3 ports to use. The problem being that the remaining 3 ports are being used by my desktop, my xbox 360 and my grandparent’s computer.
This means that my Asterisk pabx/NAS/Shell Server, OpenBravo server, SheevaPlug, Desktop IP Phone, Linksys ATA are all without ports to connect to my network with.
I am debating whether to get either a gigabit switch or a conventional 10/100 switch. The Gigabit switch would future proof my network for a fair while yet but most of my gear only has 10/100 ports in it. I guess that I could always get the 10/100 switch now and replace it with a gigabit switch later but there is no fun in that. Although if I do get the 10/100 switch now I can later re-task it for use on my IP surveillance system.

Doubt anyone has noticed that the blog has been down for a while but it has been due to issues with an upstream provider. My most recent backups were on that server and stupid me forgot to bring the recent backups with me when I went on holidays so I am going to start the blog again.
When I get home I am going to find a lot of my funny pictures and re upload them here but for the time being I am unable to do so as I only have my eeepc which doesn’t have any of them.
The new server has the following specifications:
- Atom 330 Dual Core CPU
- 250 GB SATA Hard Disk
- 1GB of ram
This server should be a lot better then the P4 that I was previously using especially since this server is dual core and the other was a single core. I have not yet tried OpenSim on the server but I am confident that it will work a lot better since since MySQL, Email, Apache, Opensim, Mono and everything else doesn’t have to share the same CPU core anymore.
The only issue I have with this server is the cost, it costs 3 times more then my previous server although I do have a bit more grunt, more bandwidth and more disk space to play with. Fortunatly I do have a couple of project ideas to make more money to help pay for the server unfortunatly I don’t have the time to work on them currently and for the ugly some of them were lost with the previous server although fortunatly for me I was using my eeepc to develop and test them so not too much of thoes projects was lost.
